Well, that’s over. Fat-phobia is now a thing of the past. And we’ll only get more sophisticated and more compassionate.
We can see the harm better than ever.
Which means that anything that’s ever been written about thin being the holy-grail of health now looks antiquated and sad. Which in turn means that all the privilege of being thin has also disappeared.
That’s what humans keep doing… things we thought were impossible.
Most of us turned a blind eye when research came out and people in bigger bodies spoke out saying we could do better.
And we avoided the topic when we discovered our beliefs about fat and food were based on false information.
But now, it ought to make you shudder to discover that something as basic as health at every size used to be seen as controversial.
Once it was done a little though, it quickly became commonplace.
And as we all know, when we do something that’s commonplace, it starts a flywheel that’s hard to stop.
The goal can’t ever again be one of fitting a prescribed size or shape or health, not for people anyway. It needs to be humanity. The hard work of caring, of empathy and of connection.
If we make the common mistake, again, of marginalizing a community, we better be sure those of us who have stood tall are in the back room having a cuppa. And, you better believe, sooner or later, we’ll come out the front and stand again.
