Why commission a painting?
Emma’s commissioned paintings are amongst her strongest work. This is becuase Emma has the commissioner of the artwork in mind while she is painting. The process creates a deeper and more fulfilling connection to the artwork for the commissioner, which in turn is more fulfilling for Emma. A greater ‘presence’ is often achieved because the spirit of the subject’s (the person who the painting is for) life is imbued in the artwork.
What is the process of having a commission completed?
The first step is a structured discussion with Emma. This conversation is used as a way for Emma to gain insight and understanding of what is important to the commissioner; what makes them smile, brings lightness and fun into their life etc. Specific colours, size, and feel can be talked about and accommodated.
Once this discussion is completed, the following steps need to be taken:
- Details of size, delivery date, costs etc, are confirmed.
- A 20% deposit obtained. Emma can then make the canvas.
- Painting completed. Either photos are sent or if possible you can visit Emma’s studio to view the painting.
- Painting photographed and copy sent to you.
- Paintings packaged and couriered to you. Or Emma will come and hang the painting, depending on your location. Balance of payment is due and payable on delivery.
Be assured that this is not a scary process, in fact quite the opposite. Emma has completed many commissions locally, nationally and for international clients. Her waiting list is usually up to 2-3 months.

What does a commissioned artwork cost?
Prices range from NZ$500 upwards. An indication of size for a NZ$500 painting may be 350 x 350 mm. A painting 1000mm x 1000mm may cost NZ$3,500 depending on its complexity.
Painting costs are calculated taking into consideration a number of factors, including:
- The amount of time involved to complete the painting. Emma uses many layers to create the depth of colour. This means a large painting can take up to 6 weeks to complete.
- The degree of complexity together with the applied skills and experience required.
- The size of the piece.
- The quality of the materials involved. Emma uses the very best paints and quality canvases, which means her paintings will last many generations.
